Future challanges – the new Sweden
Posted by Volante / / Research
In 2012, the Swedish government launched an initiative to look at upcoming challenges for Swedish society in 2030-2050 – the Commission on the Future. In collaboration with the Commission on the Future, Volante published the anthology Framtidsutmaningar – det nya Sverige (Challenges of the Future – the New Sweden) with twenty-one of Sweden’s most interesting researchers and experts in a vast range of subjects. The editor of the anthology is Jesper Strömbäck, Director of the Commission on the Future.
The book addresses questions such as: When looking back, what will people of the future say about our time? Will they call us insightful and say that we had a sustainable thinking? Or will they say that we didn’t understand? That we did not realise the opportunities offered to us? Will they see us as role models or as a cautionary example?
It is of course impossible to know for certain what the answers will be: only time will tell. However, the future is never isolated from previous history, so our actions today affect the answers in the future. What the future holds depends on our ability to identify and discuss the challenges and possibilities that await us, and how we are able to tackle these matters.
